Become a Judge

Thank you for your interest in becoming a judge with the league

This is the most important and challenging role within SVDL. You will be tasked with deciding which debater has best presented their information to win. If selected as a judge you will be one of two judges during the regular season on a rotational basis. The winner is determined by a user-friendly point system that you will be trained to use for accuracy. During the playoffs/championship rounds you will be one of three judges that will choose the victor by a wins and loss system. You will make brief commentary and keep light notes to back up your decision. TIES ARE PROHIBITED IN THE POST SEASON. You are expected to be decisive.

After you complete the application, the next steps will be to take part in a brief interview with the commissioner. We ask that you share some things about yourself and talk to us about why you would be a good fit with the league. If selected, you will be introduced to the SVDL family on a YouTube stream where you will share what you bring to the league.

It is of utmost importance that judges of SVDL follow the code of conduct including the following:

• Refrain from any, and all aspects of BIAS.

• Show the capacity to put personal views aside and judge based on who presents and validates their argument best.

• Do not judge against a debater because of their belief system or personality.

Judges should look for key points to assist in their decision including the following:

•  Debater proves their OWN argument backed by sighted sources

•  Debater who best commands the information.

•  Debater convinces the opponent to concede or agree to their argument.

•  Debater creates a clear concise presentation, has clear camera/mic and no distractions.
